 My Thoughts

 A skeptic takes on "the most haunted house in Virginia". What could be better than that premise. The Siren and the Specter is a bone chilling ghost story with plenty of exciting scares and twists. The haunting scenes are the scariest I have ever read, and I found that I could not put it down. This novel is gory, spooky, and hedonistic to the core.

The setting is a small lake community by a forest in a house built in the 1700s. This setting provides the perfect atmospheric backdrop for a fantastic horror novel.

This small lake town is full of interesting characters including a no-nonsense sheriff and depraved neighbors. The main character David Caine is slow to believe in the supernatural, but is confronted by two spirits that will make him rethink his beliefs and face his past. He is such a great protagonist.

I would recommend The Siren and the Specter by Jonathan Janz to those who love horror and ghost stories. This one is scary, twisted, and addictive.

Boys in the Valley by Philip Fracassi

It is not easy growing up in a turn of the century group home for boys run by priests like the orphans in this religious horror story. Peter is a 16 year old orphan trying to choose between becoming a priest and being with the girl he loves. The toughest things the boys have to deal with are punishments from overzealous staff and small food rations until one night the sheriff rolls in with someone he believes to be possessed. That is when all hell breaks loose. This was a super scary thrill ride of a novel. The characters were all developed so well. There are characters to love and some to hate, but none are one sided. These are very familiar yet his stories are wholly unique and surprising as these themes are turned on their head. These are novellas I will not soon forget. Half the House is Haunted explores a brother and sister's relationship growing up in a house that was half haunted. What does that mean? Which half? 4 stars Argyle follows a dying man's confessions of dark twisted desires that he never acted on.
